Treatment Seasons

Spring: Early Season

When the trees wake up and stress shows early

Spring along the Front Range often starts warm and dry, which can push trees into early bud break. If cooler temperatures, heavy precipitation, or hail follow, the sudden shift can stress developing leaves and roots. These conditions can also increase the risk of foliar fungal diseases, including Marssonina leaf spot in aspens and hawthorn-apple rust. In some landscapes, saturated soils may temporarily limit oxygen to roots, adding another layer of stress.

  • TreeGuard focus in spring:
    • Protecting new growth, support root health, and reduce early-season disease pressure before problems take hold.

Summer: Mid Season

Heat, drought and peak pest activity

Early and mid-summer conditions in the Pikes Peak Region frequently trends hotter and drier, increasing drought stress, especially for shallow-rooted trees or those near hardscapes. Heat-stressed trees are more susceptible to insects, and summer often brings increased activity from spider mites, eriophyid mites, scale insects, and wood-boring beetles that target weakened trees. Conditions may stabilize later in the season, but damage can already be underway.

  • TreeGuard focus in summer:
    • Ongoing monitoring and targeted treatments to manage pests that thrive during hot, dry conditions.

Fall: Late Season

Preparing the trees for winter stress

Fall is often warmer and drier than average, with limited early snowfall. While mild weather can feel like a bonus, it often means less natural moisture recharge and reduced insulation for roots heading into winter. Trees that enter dormancy already stressed are more vulnerable to winter damage and slower spring recovery.

  • TreeGuard focus in fall:
    • Late-season protection and preparation to help trees go into winter healthier and more resilient.

Winter: Dormant Season

Dryness doesn't take a snow day

Even though trees are dormant, winter conditions in the Pikes Peak Region are often cold, windy, and extremely dry. Limited snowfall and frozen soils can reduce natural moisture recharge, leaving roots vulnerable to dehydration. Evergreens, newly planted trees, and trees in exposed or south-facing areas are especially at risk of winter burn, needle loss, and delayed spring recovery.

  • Winter focus:
    • Consistent winter watering during warmer periods helps maintain root health and reduces stress before spring growth begins. Learn more about proper timing and professional services here:
