Have you ever noticed snow mold in your yard? Do you know what snow mold is or what it even looks like?
Snow mold is a type of fungus that grows in your yard and is usually discolored, and matted in patches.
If you’ve lived in Colorado long enough, you’ve probably noticed this time and time again. It usually shrinks as the temperature becomes warmer and the weather becomes drier, but this is not always the case.
What Causes Snow Mold?
Snow mold is a fungal disease that starts to appear as the snow in your yard melts. It is most common during the years when early, deep snow cover prevents the ground from freezing. It can continue to show in the spring as matted, tan rings in your yard. To help keep this out of your yard, mow your grass before the first snow. Long grass blades are like a breeding ground of this type of mold. Clean up the surrounding leaves as a pile-up can also create an environment for snow mold.
Treating Snow Mold
In the springtime, if you notice snow mold, take time to rake the damage spots to help aerate and dry out the grass blades. Reseeding the bare spots will also help the remove the mold. To help the snow melt quickly, keep the snow spread out to avoid larger piles that will take longer to melt.
